San Francisco Kings!!!
« on: October 15, 2012, 04:18:01 PM »
It's been a while so I thought you guys might like some Left Coast action.

Met up at Pier52 for an early morning run. Almost didn't make it as my electronics were not functioning. Managed to find the culprit. With the LSS-1 disconnected everything worked out.

Headed out the gate by 0700 and ran for the middle grounds. Sporadic but good markings of bait and we put em in around 0730. About an hour went by and I get a hook up using a Slingblade and FBR 45 OTW. Skunk off. 10lber.

Another hour goes by with nothing. Switch up my bait to home made wire-baiter chovie and 2-3min later 15lber in the box. Drop down again, 20-30 min later a shaker.

At this point we switch both rods to slingblade/wire-baiter. Another 20-30 min produces a nice spring legal fish for Steve. 10 more minutes, a shaker for me, followed by another nice keeper for Steve.

1100hrs heading back in with limits. Beautiful day.

Yep,
Probably wouldn't raise a good deal of Kingfish here in the Gulf with that rig but you gotta like the results. :thumleft:

Took a second or two to find that hula girl Capt Bob mentioned...good eye CB.

Kid, hula girls are popular on boats here too :thumright:

You guys had a nice catch! Question: notice your fish were gutted. Here in NC, illegal for recreational fishers to gut fish prior to landing. Commercial license, permissible.

What are the rules there? tx.

FL, AL, and Gulf of Mexico federal regs require fish to be whole until on land but allow for gutting or bleeding.  Head and tail must remain intact.  One may also clean fish for immediate consumption i.e. grill them on the boat while still at sea.

JJ -

Re: "Immediate consumption" - Does that include slicing up a nice freshly bled and iced football-sized blackfin for sushi, sans grill??  On good days, that's breakfast!     :pirat:

Interestingly enough, I didn't know ANY states prohibited gutting fish at sea.  Weird regulation to enforce if a recreational boater is only trying to ensure the freshest fish once he filet's back at the dock.     It's not like gutting prevents an officer from identifying or measuring a fish.  Anyone know the logic behind it?

Btw - AWESOME catch!!  I have visions of sour cream, dill and caper glazed salmon floating in my head.

Not really. The purpose of the wire is to put a bend in the bait while slow trolling.

You thread the whole wire and hook through the bait. Then attach a clip through the nose of the bait and loop in the wire. Sometimes, we thread small gauge wire to keep the gills flat too(see pic). Bend the whole bait to get a nice curve and walla...spinning anchovies.

Commercial guys use something similar called a cable baiter and/or crowbar.

No regs on cleaning fish prior to landing.

Some fish you can even fillet. But the fillets have to be a certain length and a section of skin mus be attached.

For salmon, fish must be left whole to measure and identify. Coho salmon are not allowed to be kept in CA. Any fish with a clipped adipose fin, hatchery fish, DFG can take the head for study.
