Towers

I see all these boats with towers. What is the advantage of those high towers. I would think it would be to see better, but what are you looking for. Must be rocky up there.  I must be missing something.

The smart ass answer is:
If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand. :?

The real answer is that until you have experienced a tower, in either skinny water or deep, there is no way to describe the advantage it gives a fisherman.
I'm surprised PETA hasn't tried to outlaw them. :|

It is literally a different dimension, another world, on the water. If you ride a tower, your whole perspective toward fishing/boating/diving will change.

PB-

Bob's right...If you haven't ever ridden in/driven from a tower it will open your eyes.  Literally.

I don't have all the physics committed to memory, but the reflected light in your eyes driving/spotting from a tower vs a console is reduced immensely, which gives an extreme advantage for fish/structure spotting.

Yes, the ride is obviously rougher and you can get tossed around in a chop, but with a decent cushion and familiarity with the ride of the boat it's not too bad.

What all have said.  Fish from a tower, there is no comparison...

I had no idea that you could see that much more. I never had the oppuntunity to use one. I see them on offshore boats and not flats boats, can you see schools of fish from up there?  I see a lot of them and they don't look inexpensive, so I thought there must be a reason for them and not just the current fad.

Sorry if it sounded like a dumb question but I haven't had a boat in many years and things have changed. Now that I have a boat I am noticing a few new developments.

Not a dumb question at all.

Personally, I've never owned a tower but have been lucky enough to use different styles on other owners craft. If I could afford and somehow store my current boat (totally in violation of the HOA) I would have one.

That said, if you get a chance to experience any type of device that gets you above the water, I know you will be amazed at the total difference in the world around the boat.

This type is very popular in my neck of the woods and don't think I haven't tried attaching one on the front of my WAC.

As illustrated in this example, field of vision is greatly enhanced for both Captain and crew.

Thiers no such thing as a dumb question. Especially when you don’t have any experience with or in a pacific area. I’m sure those that are on this board, at some time, didn’t know answers on subjects, that they now talk about, till they asked questions. So keep asking. It's better to ask then to make a mistake, when you could have ask. The dumb thing, is to do something, and have something happen. When all you had to was is ask. :thumright:

CB, I have to ask which did you attempt to attach the ladder or the ornament?

Now you have confronted me with another dumb question Capt. Bob. I aways thought you mounted that inside the WAC and not on a bow perch. I guess I have some catching up to do.

Tower on my last boat landed so that it covered the center console and the seat forward of it, but not the skipper. Me and my buddies rode on deck and encouraged the ladies to ride up high... its a wonder we never wrecked the boat or broke our necks as much as we rode staring straight up into the tower

My lovely wife informed me one day that they (the ladies) weren't as dumb as we might think, and we (the fellas) weren't sneaky as we thought...

So yeah, as has been said, improves views on a number of fronts.
