BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- A Baldwin County Circuit Court jury recommended today that Floyd Cardale Casey, 22, be executed for the murder of Edward Wayne McCrory, court officials said.
Casey was convicted Thursday of capital murder for his part in McCrory's death in December 2008. The 52-year-old construction worker was found beaten and stabbed to death in his home near Magnolia Springs.
Circuit Court Judge Charles Partin scheduled a sentencing date for Oct. 30. Partin is not bound by the jury recommendation and can sentence Casey to either death by lethal injection or life in prison without parole.
During the trial, prosecution witnesses testified that McCrory had been attacked in his workshop and had dragged himself about 150 feet to his home where he was found slumped over a bathtub. Assistant District Attorney David Matheny said Casey killed McCrory for a four-wheel, all-terrain vehicle that the victim was trying to sell.
Casey was also convicted of first- and second-degree theft of property.
Casey's lawyers called no witnesses during the trial, but a social worker and family members testified for the defense during the sentencing phase that Casey had been the victim of domestic violence as a child and had an IQ of about 73.
Defense lawyer Tom Dasinger asked the jury to recommend a sentence of life without parole.
