PENSACOLA, Florida -- A 47-year-old jet skier went missing Monday night in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola, Fla., and the U.S. Coast Guard is in an active search to find him.

The identity of the jet skier was not immediately released.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. j.g. Timothy Williams said that the man's wife called the Pensacola station of the Coast Guard about 8:30 p.m. after the man failed to return from his jet ski outing at the planned time an hour earlier.

The Coast Guard had three helicopters and an HC-144 fixed-wing aircraft at the scene Tuesday afternoon, Williams said.

"The Coast Guard is making every attempt to relocate the missing person; however, as Tropical Storm Isaac continues to build offshore, the increasing winds and seas make search conditions unsafe for air crews," Williams said. He added that the search would eventually be suspended when Isaac's effects became too intense for rescuers to continue.

Authorities believe that a body that washed ashore at Naval Air Station Pensacola Thursday night is that of a man missing after going Jet Skiing Monday, according to a story in The Pensacola News Journal.

The man's wife reported him missing when he failed to return after going out on a personal watercraft. The man's identity was not released.

Looks like maybe "you CAN fix stupid". It's a shame.  Susie and I took a drive last Tuesday afternoon down the beach road towards orange beach she wanted to get some pics of the beach with the big waves coming ashore.  We were standing on the dune line getting some pics and here is this young dude with his GF and he is showing her his bravery by walking out into the surf, 15 ft waves crashing down, for as far as you could see out on the gulf it was chocolate brown with seas up to 16 ft.  And I was thinking.... If he loses his footing off the drop off we have here along our beaches he's gone...

BTW, I'm watching a show on BBC here in the UK about scuba divers swimming with crocodiles - there's a bright idea     Even they're unsure of whether it's a good idea or not.

Rick - aren't the Olympics over?     Why are you still in the land of warm beer?   :cry:

I left the UK on 28July to come back home, the day after the Olympics started officially (actually they started the previous Wednesday).  Came back over this past Friday for a couple weeks. And will be back at end of Oct too. That should take care of overseas travel until Jan.  Still have one more US trip before end of year though.
BTW, the Paralympics are going on in London now. As big as the regular Olympics.
