170 bummer

Seems my 96ish 90/115 engine gave up the ghost Saturday when I was out with my little granddaughter.  Seems she's an old pro at this since she was aboard her dad's boat when it needed to get towed in, so she wasn't stress nor was I - got to use the tow service I have been paying for years now.  137 hrs on the motor since I bought it as a "rebuilt".
The mechanic told me the first 3 cyls had 130 psi, the 4th - 90  :(
He took the head off and said that he could move the piston in/out 3/8" so without going deeper he thinks something below the piston is toast - not sure what it is though.  He said that with 100ish hours since rebuild, something let go or broke. The cyl walls look good.
Thinking now, after I got his quote, that I might use this time to restore the old girl again.  She needs a new sole up front and I want to repair any damage to the hull and take her back to gelcoat on the outer hull.  Time to make her stand tall again  :D  Then I will rebuild the engine with a buddy of mine - should outlast me.
Should be a good winter project.

JMHO bud. Keep an eye out for a Yammie 3 cyl 90.

If the Johnny has been rebuilt once....she can be re-sleeved on the bad cylinder....but still....

The 90 Yammie is a honeypie, the Japanese answer to the OMC 3 cyl 70.

Skoot's 90 3 cyl Tohatsu is a darn nice engine too. Same design. And the commercial guys down your way love the Tohatsu's.

Any chance the connecting rod bolts/nuts came loose?  I've seen it happen where the rebuilder did not properly torque the connection.  Sometimes (if you are lucky) you get away with no crankshaft damage, and can just retorque and be OK.  I always use some Locktite blue on those nuts - just in case...

I think that you're thinking in the right area.  The mech said that was a possibility and that the cylinder wall looked ok.  We'll see when we get her apart.
