1996 215 Explorer worth
« on: September 04, 2012, 12:59:14 PM »
Hey Everyone!
It's been awhile since I've been on here and thought I would ask for some inputs on my boat. About 2 weeks ago I blew a piston in my 200 johnson. Not too sure on exactly what happend but it's knocking. I am thinking about putting it up for sale as a mechanic special for about a firm $6000. Does that price sound pretty fair? I will post some pictures later, but over all its in great condition for a 1996. New tires on the trailer plus new bunks and carpet.  I could rebuild it but we didnt use it that much this summer due to my son playing tournament baseball. The ways things are going, he is going to stick with it and I am the coach??? Any inputs much appreciated

Well, if you figure around $3K for a good solid re-build, then you can add that to your potential sale price.  Seeing as the rest of the rig is in good to excellent condition, I'd start a bit higher ($8500), hoping someone in the business has a good condition OMC OceanRunner/OceanPro they can swap out with your motor...

That's kind of a catch 22 situation.  You can sell it like it is and hope for a good price.... or you can fix it and then sell it... question is will it cost $1500 to fix or $3000?  And can you get that much more for it then if you sell it as is.

I do a good bit of boat shopping online and I have looked at boats with blown motors for sale.  In most cases they take a long time to sell and they never get what they want for them.  If you sell it that way your basically selling a trailer with a hunk of fiberglass on top of it.  So unless your trailer and boat are in exceptional condition people are just not going to want to pay much for it.  Here's an example...  I made on offer the other day on a boat and trailer that had no motor.  My offer was way south of the asking price and the seller didn't like it.  I told him listen..  your asking X and to get it going I will have to spend Y on a motor...  why would I do that when I can get one that is already to go for less than your X+Y would cost.

So I would look into the cost of repairing or replacing your motor and shop around to see what 215 explorers are selling for online.   Also summer is over so I would think boat sales will begin to decline.

Thanks Seabob and Wingtime, I see both of your inputs.  I just keep going back and forth on if I want to put anymore money into the boat if I am not going to keep it.  Selling it as a mechanics special may not bring me a whole lot of money, but get it off my hands instead of sitting and waiting to get fixed. I will start with putting it in the classified section on here with some good pictures for Aquasport members @ $6000. May end up on e-bay for a higher starting bid just to see if it will go for more. If anyone is interested in more details, pm me.

At this point I think this tread should go over to the Classified section...

Correct.
As stated, you will be starting a new "For Sale" thread in the Classified forum.

Thanks.
