Trailer roller height
« on: August 23, 2012, 07:37:59 PM »
The trailer front rollers on my new rig do not touch the boat. I assume they should, but have seen another boat set up the same way. Are they set low for any reason or just improperly adjusted??

Looks like they don't have much if any upwards adjustment.  the top bolts should be closer to the cross member.  I don't think you want the rollers carrying too much load.  They are there just to guide the boat on and keep it from hitting the cross member.  It's hard to see exactly what is going on without a full picture of how the boat is sitting on the trailer.

Get rid of those things, you need a V up front, this is what I have

I was thinking of going with the wood V bunk. I had one on my 17' Hydra-sports and that worked ok.

I made that one, cheap to do, you need to support the weight up there, it's not alot but it's there.

Looks good but how thick is that wood, if it's a single 2x and with those bolts so low I can see some problems with flex when you load it, I did mine with 2 2x10's and a section of 4x4 post in the middle and the bolts on top of the 4x4, the bottom of the V sits on the 4x4.

Not busting you just trying to save you a problem down the road.

The wood is 3" thick which is the same width as the crossmember.  I was concerned about it breaking but will wait and see. I have it locked down pretty good.  There are recessed 1/2" galv. threaded rods at both ends which go thru the wood and crossmember. ( you can see the nuts under the crossmember). I flipped the old roller brackets upside down and thru bolted them thru the wood. I also bedded the wood to the crossmember with Liquid Nails as extra precaution. If it doesn't work I didn't spend much on it.

Here is the cypress piece I used.  It might look like two pieces as I had to cut it from both sides due to the thickness, but it is all one block of wood.
