Garmin Mapsource update
« on: March 14, 2006, 09:31:11 AM »
Maybe I'm slow but I just updated the Mapsource software for my Garmin 162 to v6.9.1. With it running on my laptop, I noticed that there is a new feature, "view in Google Earth". When selected it brings up GoogleEarth showing all the waypoints, tracks etc. Double click a waypoint and it "flys" to it. Very cool.

Thanks for reminding me.  I knew about it but my old computer video card would not support Google Earth.  I'll have to try it with my new PC.

BTW, anyone looking for deals on PCs, I bought a refurbished 2.8 Mhz Dell Optiplex with CD burner, decent size memory and hard drive for <$240 shipping included (no operating system - provide your own windows).

I didn't even know there was a separate "Dell Auctions" website.

Picked up this "refurb'd " Dell Lattitude 610 from Dell.  Came with XP Pro.  It's only 1.2 GHz but I'm slow on the keyboard so I don't get ahead of it too often...very happy with it.  Extra drives, batteries & other bits & pieces are give-away cheap on eBay.  The "Extended Service Plan" is simplicity itself.  When the computer quits, I six it & buy another.

Don't have the Garmin system.  Is the Google Earth option simply a gee-whiz, or is it useful for nav. apps.

Very neat.  It works for me now.

Put in 27 33.206 -082 34.231 to see where I live.

Navigation?  Yep.  Look at the sandbars I have to dodge to get into the Gulf.

When I first used Earth it was a "gee-whiz" app. However, this time around I was looking at some of my more productive fishing waypoints and noticed things I couldn't see from the ground. Example is this spot where I have had success with nice Stripers. I never knew there was a tributary  right there as it can't be seen from the boat.

I have no connection with Google or Garmin.

I'm amazed at the detail.
Next time I'll be careful about taking a pee outside.

Most of Google Earth's images are not current. Last time I looked, the images for here were several years old.

Yeah, my house shows my last boat in the yard so the pic is 2-4 years old.

There is a way to see the date of each image but I forget how. Last time I looked, my area was several years old. I did notice that some places (NYC for example) are more recent.
