auto bilge pumps preferences
« on: June 23, 2012, 07:23:47 PM »
Doing some research on a secondary bilge pump for my 2-22. Plan on keeping it in the water for a few multi-day trips this July and August... Do you guys prefer the "auto" style that turn on every couple minutes to see if they sense water or the float switch style.

Debating on either 800 or 1000 gph sizes.

Go big, or bigger.

I personally do not like the switch/sensor built into the pump.  Had too much trouble with them in the past.  Really not familiar with current products so that's all I will say.

Covered float switch and a 1100 pump min
I just don't like hearing a auto pump kick on all the time

Thanks guys. I was wondering about that while actually on the boat or if i was drift fishing and the idea of a bilge kickin on every couple minutes would probably be annoying after a while.

I figured the bigger the better was the way to go! Matt- what is your set up, if you don't mind me asking specifics...

I can only speak for my model which is deep in the bilge but unless you place your head on the deck, you can't hear it at all. Only runs for a second or two. Came with the boat when I bought it and been working (for me) over two years. Slept on the deck a few weeks ago and never heard it.

I prefer separate pumps and floats.  Reason being, 95% of all failures are the float switch, not the pump.  I have 20 year ole Rules in my shop that still work fine...well, at least close to it.  With a combined, float craps out, you have to replace the whole thing.

That being said, Rule 1500 with a Rule-a-matic flat switch...

Same (almost) setup used for 14 years in my CCP. The 2000 still purrs and I'm going to place it forward of the 1500 in the stern bilge for an emergency backup (as per Pete's setup). Float switch still works too and is mounted in the forward bilge. It is indeed hard to use anything else with that success rate.

But don't get the "flat" switch!

BTW, Bob, nice looking bilge.  But I would replace the skinny 2-hole ty-wrap (mounting eye) with an adel clamp...
