Maybe Aquasports should be considered custom boats
« on: April 11, 2006, 10:33:29 AM »
With all the variation we are finding in the way Aquasports were put together - even the same model in years that were very close - it is pretty clear that production was on something less than an assembly-line basis where every boat came off the line the same.  Maybe we should claim that our classic Aquasports were, effectively, custom built!

I agree.  The hulls were constantly changing from year to year and sometimes even within the year.  Most of the time when they were bought new they were outfitted with different options according to what the new owner wanted.  There was a great variety of options, so almost no boats were exactly the same.  Unlike today.

Just with the liner of the 170 there are at least three major mold variations, possibly more.  As far as the hulls themselves I think those remained pretty constant over the years.  Unless I'm mistaken, aside from the flatbacks, there's no clue as to the age of a 22-2 just by looking at the hull.

I think there were customs, coupled with a myriad of options, but by and large, I think most were off the shelf boats.  I've got the original sales orders for my boat and I don't get the impression that there was much custom.  Of course, in the years that followed delivery there were lots of additions.
