Aquasport 250ccp repower
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:17:52 PM »
I have a 1987 250 ccp. it has twin 140 evinrude loopers on it circa 1987. After a hard jolt on the trailer the steering arm on the port motor broke as it was pretty well rusted. Instead of changing it I have been toying with the idea of throwing a 225 verado on it that I had for another project. It is a longshaft which is what I'd need to go to a single. My question is, how do you all think it would run with the 225v-rod? I haven't ran the boat with the twin 140 rudes on it so I have really nothing to compare. Also do you think it would sit about the same in the water with the single on it instead of the twins? The batteries are already moved to under the console.

Cliff notes.
Twin 140s to 225 v-rod.
1. Will it push it fine
2. How will it sit in water, meaning lower in the transom than with twins or about the same?

Thanks

aqua,
A comparison to your 250 might be the 245/250 Osprey that I used to build, standard power was a 225, option at that time a 250.  Now the Vrod weighs in at 662 dry, so compare that with the combined weight of the 140s.  Less, obviously, with the Vrod.  Second, consider you have less drag with a single VS twins, which will help you out even more.  Third, the old 140s are most likely a bit down on power, given compression losses and what have you, so their combined 280 HP is probably closer to 240 HP.

Just some food for thought...

Are those 140 loopers HP rated at the crank or the prop?  I believe motors of that age were rated at the crank.  The V-rod is rated at the prop.  I have the newer version of your boat the 245 Explorer with a 225 two stroke.  I think a V-rod 225 would be a great power match for that hull.

Hiya!

My bud Chris Bellamy from up here (He plays Jimmy Buffet tunes in SoFla for a living) has an original '88 250 CCP. Straight from the factory with twin 115 V4 Yammies.

Repowered in 2002 with guess what? 2002 twin V4 two stroke 115 Yammies...again.

Nothing like twins on that hull. When you run twins...you fall in love.

The single you reference will do nicely. Lot of folks run singles.

Depends on usage.

Hang around inshore, daily basis, running charters, going to the beach, drinking beer, eating chicken....twins are unnecessary.

Offshore 30, 40, 50 miles and back....imperative.

That is a slick riding, smooth offshore hull. If you're looking to hang on to her...go back with the twins. You won't regret it :thumright:

I would go back to twins if i found a decent deal on a pair of 150s or 200s. (2 strokes). But as inalready own the v-rod it seems like the most logical choice currently. 30 miles off shore? I would have no problem with running a single as i do not go that far offshore with out a buddy boat reguardless. Thank you allnfor your opinions and keep them coming. :alien:

I have an 87 250 CCP and am running a single 2-stroke 200hp Suzy.  I wish I had a single 4-stroke 250 on her.  At 5,000 RPM I am getting 29 - 31 mph.  Not ideal, but it works for the moment.  Not sure if I might do better with a different prop.  DOCREED is running twin 150s on his 250.  Not sure what his top end is.  I would think you would do well with the 225...less weight, less drag, etc.

Jose, absolutely. With the single, you should be turning 5500 plus WOT, 38 to 39 mph speed over ground. Cruise 32 mph at 4300 rpm.

Re-prop.

The boys here on the board are big on Prop Gods and other quality shops. They will let you test at no charge, with purchase.

A 225 VRod would work well on that boat.  I would start with a 17 pitch prop and you should run upper 30s at WOT and about 5500 RPM.  It needs to be a 25" shaft, or XL.  You can use a 30" or XXL, but it will need to sit high on the transom.

Ditto what Gran said about twins vs. a single, but if you got it, use it!

It's a 25"shaft vrod. Things might change though.I'm trying to work a deal on 2 200hp vrods and a herm co bracket. I'd start pulling the evimrudes off if it stops raining.

my 245 with the 250 Yammi does 39 MPH (not Knots) WOT at 5500 RPM.  Maybe touch 40 on a slick day without much load.  Thats with the Mercury Enertia 15 x 15, its one bad-a$$ prop for big heavy boats with a single outboard.  Never blows out it turns and ZERO cavitation on start off.  Ken at Prop-Gods down in Miami.
