The plane was a kit plane he built himself. I understand kit plane accidents are like seven times higher than commercially built planes.

That's a real bummr. At least he went doing something he loved. That comp air 8 is a serious plane. If he lost power on take off he should had no problem landing it. Could be a classic case of a stall spin.
