Magnum S-3 radio
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:55:14 PM »
What's the deal with this CB radio? I was on the fence on weather or not to keep it and decided to let it go for now and listed it on eBay. After a couple days into the auction, they, (eBay) cancelled my listing saying that it's illegal to sell this particular radio because there's been some kind of federal band on it. I guess it is overbearing to the other radio waves.

Since I already own it, would I be breaking any laws, installing and using it, out n about, when needed?

Apparently that power lever requires a Ham radio license.

Not familiar with that radio, but if it is a HAM type, you should be able to find a buyer for it. There are all kinds of HAM clubs around. That is of course if it is in good condition.

Then just buy a new one. My personal fav. Standard Horizon GX1700 w' built in GPS. can never have too many GPS units in a boat and no wiring needed for DSC.

What's the penalty for operating a unit like this without a hamm radio licence. And if I was inclined to sell a radio like this, what would be the venue. I sell and buy alot of stuff on evil bay, and since they won't let me, I only know of craigslist. What other choices might i have.

It is most likely a CB radio equipped with what they used to call a linear amp. In some conditions, they could talk from coast to coast.

Not illegal to own...illegal to operate.

If it is the radio I'm thinking of it is a "built for export" CB that has 50 to 100 watts of transmit power.  Another words it's illegal for sale or use in the US since the FCC power limit for CB band is four watts!  I also think it has a crude transmitter that blasts all that power over several channels...

Guys, it's a 350 watt CB.  Not SSB, not exact HAM, just about the same power as a low-output local AM radio station.  Not legal in the USA, but, as Richard Petty says - "You ain't cheatin' unless you get caught."

Back in the day, the "linear" put out 150 amps.

This is more than twice as powerful. And as stated, it "walks" (crosstalks) over several channels. With a sh!tload of background noise/heavy squeal. Sounds like a NC swine slaughterhouse on a Monday morning.

OK, I think there's a couple upgrades to this model. Mine is an Magnum S-3 10 meter. 45 watts. They upgraded this model with a hyper amplified system with a cooler for it visible on the bottom. Here's the link to this one.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that it's this latter upgrade that's caused all the fuss.
