What kind of steering actuator fluid
« on: March 09, 2012, 07:18:58 PM »
Hi, I have 1998 215 Explorer with a 5.7 Volvo/Penta GS/SX Cobra. Does anyone know what kind of fluid goes in the reservoir behind the steering wheel?
The dealer I called said any kind of Dextron. I don't believe that is right.

Thanks

Most of us use the red aviation hydraulic fluid...cheapest place is the part's house at the local airport.

Seabob has some recent posts about this...try the search feature :thumright:

what gran said...

but since you have an IO, most any kind of ATF(auto tranny fluid), or any power steering fluid would work from your local auto parts store... most IO's dont have have a hydraulic helm like outboards... if there is a reservoir under the helm, a pic would help us identify what it is.

weve run nothing but cheap ATF in our searay for the last 12 years, no problems...

Aaron,
Yeah, I know, the old ATF versus Mil-Spec fluid debate...I'll stick with the Mil-Spec, $10/qt at Brooksville airport.

Here's a link to Seastar I/O steering systems, note the callout for Seastar fluid...which tells me it needs the same as an O/B system...http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/ ... pplication

Damn, Bruce, I use Phillips X/C (what the airport carries in the 5606 spec), $7/qt on that site...but I wonder what shipping would be?  And besides, the airport is just 15 minutes away...

They ship from outside Atlanta and I usually get stuff from them in one day.  Another source is Chief Aircraft.
