72 22-2
« on: February 11, 2012, 03:19:49 PM »
wondering how difficult it is to "tighten up" a bow rail on a 72 22-2... seller says that it's loose.  Is the rail thru-bolted thru the cap?  Can you get at the underside of where the rail is attached?  I'll have more questions on this one soon... thanks!!!

From the factory they were just screwed to the deck.  Over the years the holes waller out and the screws have nothng to grab.
The boat is 40+ years old, and if all original she is going to need some love.  Thru bolting is an option if not already done, but not the best fix.

remove the bow rail, grind out the gelcoat and glass where the mounting holes are, reglass, re gel coat, re drill and re mount the rail. better yet take it off for good and fill the holes

OK, got it... I'll probably have to keep the rail for a while kussa the kids.  Probably find a way to tighten it up till I can do it for real.  Thanks for the info!

DUCT TAPE FTW!

Seriously.....  I thought long and hard about whether to keep my bow rail or not and decided to ditch it.  It is a MUCH cleaner look.  If my kids can't follow directions and manage to stay in the boat, then they won't go out in it with me.  If you have very small kids, disregard my previous comment!

Safety takes precedence over looks (and it should)...bed it down with 5200, then re-screw. Deal with pretty later.

Gran,

Thanks... nothing like 5200 to keep things from falling off the hull!  I've seen folks mention marine tex to fill holes prior to re-screwing also.  The cap is a plywood sandwich right?  Probably good to get it watertight to prevent the cap from taking on water...

Wondering if the bow rail on a 19-1 is the same as a 22-2...
