Reminds me of being up in Eastern Maine - couldn't understand the natives a bit, well maybe a bit but they definitely had a accent that left me guessing.

Great post! That Old English brogue is prevalent in isolated seaport towns up and down the coast...SC and Georgia too.

The folks on the video I could easily understand, being from the coast...but about ten years ago ran into this guy from Wanchese NC....it was like he was speaking Greek.

Well Capt. Matt, good observation. And there is a reason for this.

We LOVE to talk. That is because we have a LOT to tell you about.

However, we LOVE to drink. So we must talk fast in order to tell you a LOT before we forget what is was we were going to tell you about

Whar's that mimosa?

I've told Scott this, my old boss at Proline, the Engineering Manager, was Scottish, born and bred, served in the Scottish Navy.  When he got mad, excited, or whatever, what was coming out of his mouth certainly WASN'T English!!  And there is quite a bit of Scottish heritage in those parts of the Carolinas...

The area where I live here in Nawth Carolina was settled by Scots, and there is still a good bit of heritage here.  We have several clans represented, and it is a little strange to go to church and see several men in kilts...

That reminds me of a story:

A traveling salesman was arrested outside a small town in Iowa for having relations with a sheep.

His court appointed attorney told him "people around here don't take too kindly to that type of behavior." "What should I do?", said the perv. "Well, I'd either go with a good judge or a good jury". The guy says, well, whatever you think.

Day of the trial comes up. The accused is called to the stand. His attorney says "Mr. Smith, could you tell us what transpired that evening?"

Yes he says, I was driving along a country road, a good way from town, and I had to go to the bathroom. I pulled over, and walked into the pasture, and began to urinate. At that moment...a sheep backed into me.

One of the male jurors elbows the guy next to him and says  "You know...a good sheep will do that!"

I've heard sheep will do that too, but only in hick towns, Scotland and Australia. Hey, sheep need lovin' too.

Hailing from a hick town in Tn, my kids are always confused by different accents when we see friends back in Tn and  get even more confused when we visit friends in coastal NC. My 7 year old summed the accents up pretty well by concluding the following:

1. Folks in NC speak like they have big rocks in the back of their mouth and can't pronounce r's.
2. Most TN folks talk like they have marbles in the back of their mouth and can't say r's  either. (drawl)
3. TN mountain folks speak fast and put r's where it doesn't make sense (warsh instead of wash).(twangy)

I didn't have much to add to his catchall summary.

When I first took my wife back to my old hometown in TN, she couldn't understand half of what folks were saying. On the way out of town she asked me what the hell a momonym was. At first I couldn't understand what she was asking about. We finally figured out that she didn't understand a buddy when he was updating me on his family. He kept saying "momma and them" but kind of blended it all together into a momonym. I had no explanation for why the boys back home sprinkle salt on the rim of their beer cans besides that's just what they've always done.
