find the right gauges for 150 hp johnson
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:43:37 AM »
hi,  Just about completed the restoration of a 72 22-2,  I got a deal on a 99 johnson 150 with low hours.  It is installed but didnt come with any gauges.  Searching parts places online I have no trouble finding all kinds of parts and all kinds of gauges but cant seem to find anywhere that tells me exactly what gauges to buy for this motor.  The Manual shows a tach, trim gauge and what I would call an "idiot gauge" which just lights up when something overheats or stops functioning.  I have the trim guage but cant seem to idntify and find the other two.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The way I prefer to set up the gauge package for an OMC motor is:

-0-6000 Tach with SystemCheck in the gauge face
-Voltmeter
-Water Pressure Gauge
-Fuel Gauge

If you want, Trim Gauge, but I prefer to trim by feel.  I like Farias, and I get mine through http://www.boatersland.com/faria.html

How did the Faria gauges work for you?

I believe I am going to be replacing everything with them on a 2000 Johnson 150.

I linked to this website from a listing he had on Pensacola CL.  He was advertising the OMC Tach and System Check Gauge for $100 ea. OBO!!!.  That's what I would put on there.

The idiot gauge is the Systems Check gauge. It comes either integrated into a tachometer or a separate gauge but you know that.
The link provided in an earlier posts shows the tach/check model. Here's a link to the separate gauge.

Coupled with an audible warning device, the OMC System Check is good insurance for those who don't constantly stare at their gauges but rather spend a fair amount of time relating to the surroundings. You should always be regularly glancing at the gauge cluster while underway but when concentrating on maneuvering you craft say in a heavy sea, high traffic area or just a long run out to the "secret spot" this system can save the motor from overheating before it happens.

Also, IMHO a volt gauge is another essential gauge. I personally prefer a digital readout but an analog type with a detailed scale  will work also.

The tach goes without saying.

MPH? Hole filler in my opinion. No one cares how slow they go, only how fast. Use the GPS.

I DID...came out of an Hydra-Sports, gave it to someone who needed one.  Wasn't in the best of shape...but it worked!

I am shopping right now and looking a different brands and styles.

What I think I am going to do is
- 4" Tach with "idiot gauge" built in
- Bob's Jack Plate Gauge
- Voltmeter
- Fuel
- Water Pressure
- Trim

My current "Idiot gauge" is separate and connects with a large 8 prong socket.  How does that connection work when w/in a tach?

Also - what are your thoughts on Teleflex Gauges?

Wes,
The back side of the tach has the same 8-pin Deutsch connector socket as the small stand alone gauge...

What is the general opinion on Teleflex gauges?  It seems the only line of gauges that has what I need in the look I am going for is the Teleflex Lido.
