Advise Needed
« on: January 31, 2012, 08:36:44 PM »
I want to bond some backing material to the inside sides of the original 170 center console. The backing material will be for attaching screws for wire managment, fuse box, terminal blocks, etc.

I was thinking about using 1/4" Starboard or other plastic material. Any ideas..?

Thank you

Hey! I did the same thing but used 3/4 Ply and glassed it in. 1/2 inch would have been enough!

Check out the link to my blog (in my signature). I think Starboard would be great, I just had some nice ply sitting around.

Have any pictures of your rig?

Kraw,
You can't bond starboard, nothing adheres to it.  I use 1/4" PVC board I get from HD, then bond it to the console sides (insides, of course!) with 3M Bondo Resin Jelly I get from Wally World.  Price just went up, about $13 a quart.

Trust me, this method works...

Thanks to Bob, I too have used this method. I used 3/4" PVC from Lowe's. The resin jelly bonds fast, even at 50 degrees, so you can get back to work quickly. It's soft enough that screws start easily with just a regular screwdriver, yet it has good compressive strenth. I've used the 3/4" PVC for backing on cleats, too.

Thanks Guy's,

I found some at Home Depot. 5/16"x6"x8' PVC trim board. Basically I think it's soffit board. Will work great.
