Starter Pinion
« on: December 14, 2011, 06:25:28 PM »
All, was winterizing my '99 Evi 200 FICHT and part of the plan was to lube the starter pinion. I put pinion lube on old tooth brush and was brushing it on but couldn't get to back side of pinion gear. That's when I may have done something stupid...

I manually turned the fly wheel thinking that it would turn the pinion and I could lube the back side. When I turned the flywheel the pinion gear disengaged the flywheel and slid down underneath it (i.e. the gears didn't match up anymore). Is this a big deal? Are these gears mated (i.e. in time with each other)? Did I jack up something?

I should stick to flying...

Thanks
Dan

I think you un-stuck it.  The pinion should not be engaged with the flywheel unless you are cranking the engine.

Where are you at over there, my neighbor and friend owns some property out on the cape, on the bay side, we go over ocassionaly for some scalloping and such.  And BTW, your starter is fine, as stated, you released it from where it's NOT supposed to be... Don't put too much WD40 or other lube on the starter shaft, it will run down and wash the grease from the lower bushing in the starter (which you cannot get to) and eventually cause a failure.

Thanks for the words. Good news.

I actually live in St Joe Beach. Love the bay and intercoastal. Scalloping is a great time.

Bought my boat in Pensacola last year. Love the boat, the motor worries me (history). Would love to repower but who can afford it. Check out this price quote from Auer Marine (Ft Walton Bch) yesterday:

"A new Evinrude 200 would run you $17,915.00. An Estimate of controls and rigging is $1,500.00 we can get better ideal when we see the boat. The trade value of your motor is 1500.00 pending mechanical check out. I do not stock this engine at this time. If we ordered it I would not see it until January. If I can be any further help please give me a call."

Wow, $20K! That's crazy...
