Hydraulic Tab motor... (winter storage)
« on: December 12, 2011, 07:00:09 PM »
I am hoping Tabman is around, but I am sure many of your up north may have a solution besides the obvious (which you will see in a minute)...

My tab motor is located in the top of the bilge on my 250.  Not ideal by any means, and when I asked the marina about this they said that was the best place for it for a number of reasons.
-Shortest run for the hydraulic lines
-In case of leakage its better to have it in the bilge for cleanup purposes
-There really is no other ideal place on my boat

Here is my issue - the obvious solution would be to relocate the unit... not happening.  At least not now.  I plan on taking the batteries out for the winter and keeping them on a trickle charger thus rendering the pumps in the bilge useless... I will remove the plug on the rear of the boat and hopefully can get her covered before the next snow fall... Should I cover the hydraulic motor with a plastic bag or something??  I already had to replace the motor once due to the previous owners negligence and dont want to go through that again.

Any suggestions would be helpful.  And thanks in advance! :thumright:

Jay,
I've been around Bennett tabs for a long time (no, not as long as Tabman), have never heard of "winterizing" the pump.  It's fluid is ATF.  Is there an issue with ATF freezing?  Not that I've heard of...

I'm sorry seabob4, I wasn't very clear... My concern is that the location of the pump contributed to its demise the first time  with the previous owner and the unit seized.  Since its in the bilge I think it may have taken on water or been submerged at some point.  Since I am removing the batteries I am hoping the bilge will still stay dry enough even without the pumps running - I am hoping to cover the boat but have not done so yet.  Maybe if I just wrap it with plastic to keep it dry(er)?

jay,
Where are you planning to store the boat?  On it's trailer?  On the hard?  High and dry?  If any of the above, accumulation of any water in the bilge should not affect the trim tab pump.  You also need to leave the drain plug removed...

There have been thousands and thousands of boats stored for the winter up north with nary a problem for the tab pump.  So it sounds like something was amiss due to the PO...

Awesome!  Thanks seabob4!  I am kind of a newbie here and just didn't want to screw things up! I will be keeping her on her brand new trailer... and hope to throw a huge cover on her.  I have pulled the plug (the drain plug that is) so I should be fine.

I should also should take a second and say how awesome Tabman was when I pm'd him early in my membership to this forum.  He was very responsive and put me in touch with the right person at Bennett.  Great customer service - and that is hard to find these days, as you can see in another thread not to far down the first page of this forum by wessnapp.  I hope that works out for him!

Thanks again Bob!

Ok, Bob you guys are welcome any time!  We are waiting for our closing date on 4.25 acres outside of Deland.  Come on up and do some brush clearing with me!

jaycal3,

There is no reason to "winterize" the pump for the Trim Tab system, and as Bob stated, if the plug is out you will be fine.

Your marina is a bit off target;

There is no reason that the hydraulic lines have to be short.  On my 20 foot Aquasport 20 walkaround I mounted the pump under the helm with great results. If it is installed correctly the system will not leak. If you want to relocate the pump to a drier location just let me know and I will supply the parts at no charge, only the cost of shipping.

Met the new neighbors and they brought pictures of the black bears that like to hang out on our property
Also about a dozen turkeys were walking around the place the other day.  I think we are actually going to keep it mostly wild.

If you guys ever decide to look around Mt. Dora (awesome antiques and the world famous wooden boat show), head down to Sanford, pick up SR 46 headed over to Mt. Dora.  You'll see how the state has tried to control bear crossings on 46...

Tom,
Thank you so much for the advice and offer for the parts necessary to relocate the pump.  Its tough to find good and honest Marinas and mechanics... I didnt think the answer they gave me sounded right but wasnt sure.  Relocation may be a good project in the early spring if I can work it around a couple new hatches and hopefully re-powering!  You (and Bennett) rock!
