215 exp. Deck Rebuild Question
« on: April 10, 2025, 10:42:58 AM »
good morning,

I am at the stage of putting down DivinyCell core foam.  Its apparent that my deck isn't exactly level.  the "scores" in the core foam allow it to better shape to the contours of the floor when the scoring is facing "up".

My questions are, when glass is layed over the coreboard with scoring in this facing up position, is a lot more resin required or does resin not necessarily have to completely fill the thin scored openings?  as long as the glass over it is wetted out perhaps that's all that matters?

And...once glassed over to appropriate thickness and then gelcoated, will varous contours that were in the deck be very apparent or will layers of glass and resin help to level out the deck?

When you lay glass on the core you will want to to put a layer of whatever resin you are using down first, as in pre wet the surface. In that process the scores should be filled. The dinycell is pretty thirsty stuff if memory serves. You definitely want the glass and core to bond, so voids are to be avoided if possible.

I don't know about the leveling question, but I doubt it. That being said, the deck will probably have non skid on it which hides lots of imperfections.

Thanks, @Duffy1470 for the great feedback/answer.  Do you have any experience with VinylEster?  thats the resin i'll be using when wetting out my 1708.  I have filled a few of the larger gaps that were in my core material with thickened epoxy....hopefully the vinyl ester will adhere to that okay....its not huge amounts of epoxy.

Also i've heard gelcoat adhere's well to vinylester...wondering if that has been your experience if you've used it.....

Typically, Epoxy will adhere well to vinylester and polyester resin based materials but not the other way around. If you have already used epoxy based fillers you might want to look into how you can prep and remove the amine blush as i think they call it that prevents the bond. Also, as Duffy indicated, you definitely do not want voids in the coring material before you laminate it.

first layer of fiberglass wetted out with V.E Resin.  I have some air pockets around the corners and radiuses.  Anyone have any ideas how to best deal with airpockets?  Is it really a big deal if you leave them as is?
