290 TM Transmissions
« on: September 24, 2011, 05:16:48 PM »
I just bought a 29o tournament master. Needs some work. Started cleaning and did an inventory of missing parts. The first things I need to get are Both motors and trans gone. Can anybody tell me what trans came with the crusader 270hp engine and or the 8.2 ltre detroit diesel? Also need the deckhatch motor covers.
Thanks, Troy

So, my first question, V-drives or straight shots?  Either way, you'll need the down angle of the shafts to get the right output flanges.  Are the shafts still there?  How about the struts?

Oh, and BTW...WELCOME!!

Diesels get different trans than gas engines too.  Normally gas engines use a 2:1 reduction, but often diesels do not use a reduction gear due to running at lower RPMs.  You need some spec info to get it right.

CJ,
IIRC, we were using 1.63:1 ZFs mated to Yanmars...but Yanmars will run 4200 at WOT...figure a DD turning 3K, tops...

And a small block turning 5500-6000 at WOT needs more reduction than the Yanmar...

Yep.  In other words, the OP has some research to do...

Thanks to all. I have to agree with Seabob I have some research to do. I plan on useing GM 6.2 litre supercharged diesels. These will be an easy gasoline gm bigblock replacement but much better fuel economy.  I found saome interesting and promissing results on a google search. I'll keep you all posted. a few years ago I owned a 33 coastal with 7.4 gm big blocks with Hurth ZF trans 1:1.65 ratio they turned at 4400 rpm. I believe the 6.2's turn at around 3K on the high end.
 Thanks again all!!

the term is turbocharged

anyways, i wouldnt just drop in a pair of diesels especially if they didnt already come from a boat... cars and trucks use steel freeze plugs, even if you run freshwater cooling, just the salt air and moisture in the bilge will rust out the freeze plugs in a heart beat put brass ones in...

also, i'd look for a different camshaft to make better use of the power. a truck running down the highway might be spinning 1800 tops, same with a gas car engine, cams gotta be changed to allow the engine to run near wot...

i would post more but gotta run to work... :salut:

Thanks for the advise. I intend on overhauling for marine use. Lowering the compression ratio to 18.5:1, new cam, injectors, increase fuel delivery by 10%,  brass freeze plugs etc.. Also whipple style superchargers will be used due to the fact that the 6.2's and 6.5's are very similar to gm big block gas motors to the extent that exhaustmanifolds intake manifold and most accessories bolt up. MARINE DIESEL uses this set up with 6.5's. check out their website at  www.marinedieselengineering.com/md/.
