Fishboxes always filled with water on 215 Osprey
« on: October 19, 2011, 08:31:06 PM »
I haven't been on my 215 DC for 2 weeks and just went down today to pay for winterization and check the bilge and fishboxes.  The bilge was fine, but the 2 in deck coffin fishboxes were completely filled with water.  This is just nuts already.  The fish boxes empty when I turn on the macerator pump, but if no one is on the boat, water justs seeps into them from the grooves around the hatch and they don't empty.  I would actually rather they just drain into the bilge and let the automatic pump take care of it.  Or find a way to keep water out.  I'm sure you all have this problem, but who has come up with a solution either to keep the boxes dry or just let them drain into the bilge.
And while I have your ear, why was the boat designed so that the drain holes of the fish boxes are one inch above the floor, so there is always an inch of filthy water in the boxes, even when just emptied.  The same goes for the 2 drain holes from the deck to the transom area.  The 2 water gutters always have an inch of filthy water in them because the drain holes are an inch above the lowest part of the gutters.  Why was is designed like this to be always wet and dirty?  Any fix?
Thanks, Dave

Now, while I don't have a solution, nor answer as to why the drain holes were designed to be in the locations they are, nor do I have the answer as to why the moron that drilled the holes drilled them 1" too high, how's this?  Drill a 1/2" hole in the bottom of the box, directly below the drain, and insert a rubber plug?  Keep plug in during the season, remove when laid up?  I mean, pretty simple, and pretty cheap...

That's what I did, when on the trailer, garboard drain is out, water that overflows into the fishbox, just drains right on out through the bilge

I don't have an answer to this also but I'll throw out a guess   based on the premise that the drain holes are not molded into the boxes and that they are drilled after the cap is installed.

Assume that in order to get a "clean hole" in which to mount the drain, one drills from the inside of the box. This would be to lessen damage from the drill bit that may occur on the exit wound side (hull), doesn't increase the damage to the rounded corners of the molded box and assures a flat mounting surface for the drain fitting/connection.

Assuming they are drilled from the inside of the box into the hull, maybe the level is raised to allow clearance of the drill frame/chuck and the bottom of the box. Even if it's just a fish box, a builder doesn't want to have to repair boxes during the manufacturing process because they are continually "scared up" by the line worker. :x

You know how those morons are if you try and have them think outside the fish box.

Never seen it done this, or any other way.
Just guessin.

in my process of modifying my fishboxes I may have found out why they mounted the pump out where they did. When I put the drain on the bottom and you are pumping out water it forms a vortex as it pumps it out, that allows it to suck in air and it stops pumping. So you have to use a brush or your foot to break up the vortex so it doesn't get air,not perfect but it gets the water down to about 1/4".the problem is that the box is in the floor and to drain the outlet would have to be below the waterline to function, not a good place to put a drain. So instead you need a way to pump out the water,as it pumps if it sucks in air it won't pump.the best thing to do is mount a bilge pump in the box so it wont suck in air till the water is almost gone.hope thats clear
