Transom
« on: February 07, 2006, 09:43:55 AM »
I just picked up an older 1987 17' Aquasport Osprey.  The transom has a crack where it meets the cap.  Pictures are posted in the rebuild section.  I am in the process of acquiring a new engine and am debating on either fixing the transome and keeping it as-is or enclosing the transom.  The core isn't rotten from what I can tell at this time, so a fix would be the easiest, but I am not averse to enclosing it either.  I am curiuos what experiences you have had enclosing the transom???  Do you think it is worth it?????  The current engine is a 115 horse Evinrude and I am strongly looking at a used 100 horse merc right now to repower with.

Thanks for any comments.  I will post pics when I as I begin the project within the month....

I think you and I are looking at the same problem w/the transom cap crack.  this has to be as common as dirt on older AS's.   I've had two w/the same problem.  I got some good feedback that gave some insight into the problem on my post, but nothing came back w/repair recommendations.   What's your thinkng on this and have you had any repair suggestions for the cap?

Otherwise, my transom seems quite solid and I really don't want to sink a wad of $ in this boat.  Probably won't keep it many more years.

I assume if you enclose the transom, that you will add a bracket?

Not a good idea on a 17ftr. It will throw thing's way out of balance.

Warthog, that is what I was thinking, thanks for the advice.  I have decided to take the "if it aint broke don't fix it approach" and just repair the crack because the core is in fine shape.

Eeker, I will take the motor off and cut through the glass just below the crack and delamination.  Then sand good for a new layer of fiberlgass.  I will take the cap off and put on a new cap, with wrapping the fiberglass over the top.  Then I am looking for a repower...I have been keeping an eye out on good used motors.

Did you ever get some pictures of your situation posted?  I couldn't find any.   If you go to my post on this subject, you can see some closeup shots of my problem.  How similar is this to what you are seeing?

On your re-cap plans, what are you going to use for the new cap?

Why are pix's not posted with a thread? It's a PITA to have to serch thru a bunch of pix's and not knowing if your looking at the right one's when you think you've found them.

I'll re-post a couple of mine to this thread and see if they facilitate the discussion.  I'm guessing yours are virtually the same.

I currently am rebuiding a 17 and plan on completely enclosing the transom and finishing it off with an aluminum bracket for twin 60s.
