When'd You Last See One Of These?

This is a console from a 1970 AS 222.  Above the wheel is a frozen up compass, to the right of the compass is an EIGHT TRACK STEREO, along with two speakers set on top of the console.  You can't see it in this picture but under the console is a VHF radio thats half the size of a microwave oven and weighs twice as much.  Both probably state of the art in the early 1970's.

I bet those speaker magnets didn't do the compass any good.  Someone probably didn't think that one through too well.  Mine is mounted in an aluminum riser.  Everyone sees it and thinks it'll mess with the compass until I tell them it's aluminum.

Those throttles are unbelievable!!  Was that for the twin 70's?

That's probably a good guess Wilson - twin 70's.  The boat came with out power so I don't know for sure, but I know that was a popular configuration back then.  In the pic the guy just cut out a rectangular hole in the console to run the throttle cables.  Under the control box was a piece of teak he tried to form to the console top to make the box lay flat. He did a decent job of it, it just looked like hell.  The gas tanks where twin steel and sat under the console on top of the floor.  You can see the gas caps on both sides of the console top at the rim of the wheel.  Yea - this was the console before I ripped it apart.

Believe it or not, once I got everything off my console it was 3 times as bad as that.  I've never seen so many holes.

Wilson - Did your console have one of these holes?
I'm redesigning the whole thing - raising the top about 6 inches and reconfiguring the layout.  It'll be awhile but it's coming along - slowly.

I think when they went to the newer hull (the one with some deadrise) the console got an overhaul too.  Seadog, I'll bet that old VHF had some tubes in it.  I still have the Pierce-Simpson Bimini that was OE on my boat.  A whopping six channels with rocks (crystals) for each channel.   I'm planning to go for the ultra clean look on when I do the re-furb.  I want to clean up to two guages tach, voltmeter and, water pressue.  I may even eliminate the switch plate, which yours doesn't seem to have.  I got to thinking about all the electrical functions on that pannel and most of them were lights, which could mostly be accomplished with a two position pull out switch.  First position anchor light, second running lights.  I'd have to do something for courtesy lights.  If I eliminated the switch plate, I'd want to flush mount the GPS/Plotter/Fishfinder into the dash itself.

Radioshop - Pierce-Simpson Bimini? Switch Plate? Rocks? Crystals? WTF is that? You lost me.   Flush mount, running lights and  GPS combo I got. HA!  I see from your profile your a radio guy so you'll be a good guy to know and have around when we need some electrical advise. I take it your rebuilding your console too?  Got any pix?
