I really appreciate the advice and comments...confirms my initial interest in this trip!
I do have a mapping GPS on board...and would probably buy the lastest Florida 'chip' for it...my Texas Coast chip is amazingly accurate and well worth the money. Got caught in a rolling fog bank down toward Corpus Christi a few years ago...absolutely no visibility beyond - maybe - 100 feet. I know those back bays pretty well, knew generally where to go, but they're tricky. Anyway, I put my son on the bow, started watching the GPS map, and we just putt-putted along, headed toward the ICW. As the channel markers showed up on the screen I said, "Ok...you should see the red marker in a minute. 15 seconds later he says, "There it is."
Thank you, US Military Establishment.
And in honor of the Texas Aggies joining the SEC:
Two Aggies are walking along the beach at Marco Island, when they see a dog sitting on the sand, turned around, licking himself.
One of the Aggies says, "Man! Don't you wish YOU could do that?"
And the other one says, "Oh yeah!...but I'm afraid he'd bite me."
That one never gets old...

alright...I cry "UNCLE".... I don't think the 48 bugs I caught during miniseason weighed that much. That carapace is as big around as my thigh!
Father n law regularly pulls 10-15lb bugs in Jacksonville area, but I don't think he's ever bagged anything that big!

These guys have already nailed it. Don't go for mini season, it's a bunch of drunk people trying to run you over. I have seen people literally get into fist fights over a spot.
Also, trailer the boat. The weather in the keys can change unexpectedly, and you don't wanna be a C-note from home in a 170 and can't make it back for 2 days.
Here's some from this year:

Lil Richard, et al...
Ok...my notes now say:
* Mini-Season is "out"
* Second week of Reg. Season is "Likely"
* Trailer from place to place. (no problem...brand new trailer!)
* Try to get some GPS locations from you guys. (then delete 'em).
I brought up the idea with PJ this weekend...she's 'in'.
So as we get a little closer to next season, I'll have to inquire about hotels along the Keys...my understanding is that you can't tell much from the 'net down there.

"That is very true most the time, the famous high dollar places are always nice though."
Thanks Scott...we're pretty low-maintenance except that for some reason, she INSISTS on the "no bedbugs" rule. A few years ago we were going to Port O'Connor, Tx pretty regularly...it's just a fishing/duck hunting town with some so-called "historic" motels (read: dumps). One night, after a shower, she held up her towel with one hand behind it, and said, "Ok, how many fingers am I holding up?" I said, "Three" (correct answer). She said, "These towels are a little thin. We have GOT to find a better place to stay."
So I don't need "high-end/expensive", but I do need 'clean/well-kept'. (Maybe that means 'high-end/expensive"!)

You get what you pay for down there,if you just want a bed, shower,ac,and a pool because your boating all day that can be had reasonably, the place we stayed at had those cheap but the units were older and they looked it,they did have some new cottages they built that were real nice but more $,still cheaper than alot of places though,i may stay in those next year.
