Savin Fuel (Peace River kayak trip)
« on: August 18, 2011, 02:04:28 PM »
My cousin and I decided to take our kayaks down the Peace river from Highway 60 in Bartow, FL to Highway 41 in Punta Gorda, FL. The trip was 105 miles from start to finish as the river winds and we finished in 3 days.  It was a hot one.

Here's a pic of the entire trip...

Here's the Day 1 leg. 37.2 miles...

Day 2 leg. 45.4 miles...

Cooling off on Day 2...

Crab traps and cows just south of Arcadia...I know I shouldn't, but I couldn't stand it, so I pulled the first trap and sure enough, there were 2 large blue crabs and 1 bluegill inside.

Day 3 leg. 22.4 miles...

We ran into the crabbers sometime in the morning on Day 3...

Highway 41 Bridge...

Final destination. Punta Gorda boat ramp next to Highway 41...

Sounds like a fun trip, minus the hot part,i used to do trips there years ago,and the last one was in Sept about ten years ago so i have an idea what you went thru.

By the way how did the crabs taste.

Looks like a fun trip!  You guys must have been paddling hard to make that distance in 3 days

I've been getting into kayaking lately myself- a friend of mine had a pair of old rafting kayaks we used and went 31 miles with 2 other couples and camped overnight.  Nothing like living out of a piece of plastic for 2 days...  :)

Now I'm hooked, and have been trying to find a good deal on some 11 or 12' kayaks; those rafting kayaks are just too slow.

I assure you that I left the crabs and the bluegill in the trap.

We had a decent current behind us until the last day so that helped.  We may have passed 50 miles on the first day if it weren't for a mass of weeds that make the river impassable (unless you're willing to pull through it). Here's what we encountered 3 miles into it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YROSBbNShAM

Looks like they need to run a lawnmower over the river up there.

Almost like the land is trying to take back the river    That looks like a prime spot for gators and snakes to lay out.  I'd have been skurred.

We probably saw an average of 1 gator per mile on that trip.  We finally gave up paddling through the weeds and just used our hands to pull our way through.  All I could think about was that I was going to grab a snake at any moment.  I saw zero snakes on the entire trip and that made me happy.

Here's a photo from my Myakka River trip a year or so ago. We went from Myakka City to Boca Grande. Charlotte Harbor is no fun to kayak across by the way.  If you want to see gators the Myakka River is the place to see them. The best spot is inside the state park just south of Highway 72 in the lake called Deep Hole.
