If he brings her down sooner than planned, I'll adapt...

That is paramount in today's world...

My Saturday project was removing the tilt and trim unit and replacing it with the one flounderpounder found for me. I took all yalls advice and it went about like you guys had said. The lower pin was very stuck! We beat on it with a drift and 2 lb hammer and it would not move. I got the torch out and heated the pin housing and tried again still nothing. The problem was it was extremely hard to get good contact with the hammer in a consistent manner. Then I had an idea, I got my grandads old 1 lb ballpeen hammer and put the round end on the end of the pin. Now I had something I could hit! Added a little more heat and the second hit it moved. It got dark on us and had to leave it tied to the stepladder all night. My help got back over about noon today and we put the pins back in. Once we got them in we needed to lower the motor so I could wire it back up and route the fuel lines and cables. We untied it and slowly lowered it by hand until it contacted the stops.
At that moment, just as it settled in there was a cracking noise and suddenly hydraulic fluid starts pouring out everywhere. WTF!!!!!!

The trim limit pin was in the #1 position and somehow when this thing dropped in it cracked the reservoir. WTF!!!
I got really mad and we pulled it back up and put the limit pin in the #6 position just to keep it off of it. At this point I am pissed and frustrated and just left it that way.
I spent the rest of the day with my son and after taking him back to momma I called my help back since I had cooled off (finally!). We raised it back up and attached it to the ladder again. I took the reservoir off the old unit and removed the cracked one. I put the old one on the new TTU and put it back on the trailering locks.
The cracked one had been split across the top front to back about two inches.
These reservoirs are exactly the same and I don't want to bust another one.
Any ideas why this happened? I did notice that when it was all the way down after it had cracked it the ventilation plate was touching the transom.

I am not sure what happened to this thing, but I have been in Savannah the last two days. I got back home this afternoon and my help came back over. We put the limit pin in the #2 position and carefully lowered it down. It doesn't touch the reservoir. I had talked to a guy at River Supply in Thunderbolt this morning and he said the only thing he could think of the pressure when we lowered it popped it like a egg. After looking at it there isn't a mark on the one that cracked. Hmmmmm. Before we lowered it tonight I took the cap off the reservoir and as we lowered it a good bit of fluid came out. I am still not understanding what happened but I will try to get it finished when I get back from Panama City. I have to work there the next couple of days and then I am going to try and catch a cobia. I understand they caught one out of Bay Point today that weighed 97 lbs.

It was probably the negative expansion rate when transferred from Pensacola at sea level to Lawrenceville at static pressure, then invert the biaxial co-efficient for the viscosity of the fluid, minus the durometer rating of the plastic resevoir and I think you will have your answer. (Scott.... do you agree)??
Or as we spoke on the phone earlier just "FM"   .    Have fun in P-city, give me a call this weekend.

Heh heh.  Spring break on the Gulf Coast is not something one forgets.  I always looked older and one time in PC when I was still in high school....  Well, never mind.

I finally got the new starter and bendix and took the boat out to a guy east of ATL near Lake Oconee. He was raised on these motors and I am getting him to replace the bendix since that involves pulling the timing base and flywheel cover. I went past there the other day and he had just started working on it, I got to watch as he took it apart. This guy really knows these things, he had the whole top off in 10 minutes. Once we pulled the flywheel you could smell a burnt electric smell. The stator was toast, almost all the packing inside the windings had oozed out all over the top of the powerhead. So he got one ordered the other day from CDI and received it today. With the new starter and stator and regulator the PO had put on there he was finally able to check compression. Finally some good news! Starboard side all 100 psi. Port side 105, 100, 105. This was cold and he is going to decarb once he gets the small plastic pieces on the rails the butterflys are attached to. They were very worn and it made it impossible to link and synch it.  I might get this thing in the water very soon.

Good deal.  Ran one of those on a 2100 CC Hydraport. Ran nice, smooth, quiet, idled well. Great torque, excellent top-end. When introduced, was the first loop-charged V-6. Never a minute's trouble from that motor.

You'll be pleased, and congrats on the great news on the compression test.

Looking forward to checking her out.

PS...like the blue :thumright:
