Check your local outboard dealers for bulk oil sales, I buy Yamalube 2M for $17 per gallon, bulk.  I have a 5 Gallon used oil bucket with top and spout, bought one of these to transfer the oil, no mess and easy.  http://www.harborfreight.com/5-gallon-p ... 95068.html

Penzoil is a good oil also, many swear buy it, the 2 stroke oil debate has no end, use TCW-3 oil, and technically you have met the MFG requirement.  For me personally, at $17 per gallon, compared to $15 for non OEM oil, I will stay with the Yami-Lube, but bulk is the way to go.

What did we ever do before harbor freight  :?:
I've been buying stuff from them since they were mail order only - some you need to buy 2 of right off the bat but a lot will withstand the craftsman (not the pro).

Much, much has been the debate on Yamalube versus Pennzoil versus Royal Purple, versus every other lubricant out there.  How does one really tell which one is better?  Millage is one way that I know of, but each person's boat and throttle hand are different.  Other than that, what is the determining factor in telling which oil is better?  An engine teardown, and how often do we do that, unless the motor crapped out?  And even then, it could be a mechanical issue, and not a lubricant issue...

Just thought I'd throw this out there....

 SB,
I couldn't agree more with you. I have owned boats all my life and have used everything from wal-mart 2 cycle oil to pennzoil to the expensive stuff. People will come back at you and say, you pay for what you get but I never have had any major engine failure. Example: All I use now is Pennzoil syn blend and buy it when its on sale. Been using it forever and my engine seems to be happy. I do take care of my engine though!

I've been using Mercury oil for 30+ years now and have probably wasted $100`s of dollars over the years paying the premium for the name. I've never had a powerhead failure (I just knocked on wood) Of all the powerheads I have seen fail; most have been to overheating, water ingestion and seal/gasket failures. Most of all neglect and ignorance being the root cause for the above failures. I've wasted so much money on other crap in life, paying top dollar for name brand oil truly pales in comparison.
