New boat owner seeking help...anyone in CT??
« on: April 28, 2011, 11:50:24 PM »
I am new to owning a boat and my first is a 25' Osprey (Center Console - circa 1986-87).  The motor is a 1986-87 Yamaha V6 SPCXK (220hp).  I brought the boat to a local boat yard to have the motor tested and the wiring inspected as well as a general all around boat inspection.  She seems very solid and is rigged for open water/deep sea fishing. I was told I needed a new motor but my father , uncle (who is a Charter Captain) and others have said I don't.  The compression test results are below.

I have a few concerns:
- Something may be draining the batteries with a constant draw.
- Has shore power but I am not sure if this has something to do with the above issue.
- Had compression test done (Left Side - 120,125,120 / Right Side - 110,125,130).
- Bilge pump may or may not pump automatically but does pump on manual according to previous owner.

I am dying to get in the water... I have purchased a couple brand new batteries and would like to have someone reputable look at it.  Is there anyone on the forum near Shelton Ct or a marina/mechanic someone can recommend to look at the motor and "clean up" some of the wiring?
Thanks in advance... oh, and here she is  :thumright:

Well, BlackfinMike, over on THT, flew me up to Dix Hills (Huntington, LI) to work on his Blackfin.  Same deal, I'd consider it...

Just as an update, I got the motor running this weekend and honestly it sounds awesome and strong.  The guy that helped me said his compression readings were 150 across the board... is it possible that I was being "taken" for a ride to buy a new motor???

I plan on doing some work on the wiring this weekend and also making sure the bilge pump works correctly - it pumps on manual but doesnt seem to be working on auto - may be something simple...

May be kind of late, but I have dealt with a mechanic/boatyard in Madison for several years and he is as good as it gets!
Absolutely trustworthy, knowledgeable, truthful, and to top it off he is a Yamaha dealer.
He has bailed me out on numerous occasions. Let me know if you want his name, etc.
