1981 24' Fishhawk Flatback Rebuild
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:08:42 PM »
Hey Guys,
I just joined the site because I just picked up a 24' Fishhawk Flatback that I am planning a complete rebuild on. I was hoping to get some advice from anyone who has done complete rebuilds and might have some tips/suggestions. It is similar to a 222 or pro-line with a little higher bow. The boat is almost gutted and ready for me to start rebuilding. Should I start with the transom, stringers, or flip it over and redo the outside first. I'm hearing more and more about poured transoms lately, any comments on them? The boat has the outter glass of the transom but none of the structure so it would probably be easy to form and pour if thats a good system. Any suggestions would be awesome.
Thanks,
Trevor

Pictures will be up as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Welcome aboard! Lets see some pics! I would really like to see what this hull looks like.

Make sure and read lil richard's thread, there is a huge amount of info in there.

Also scroll down this forum and there are quite a few hulls under construction right now. thennuts, terntwo24, dirtwheelsfl just to name a few. Look at who started the thread to find these and there are more in the list also.

Poured transoms, hmmmmm, I like the idea, but every time I see someone do one with it, they either run out or mix it wrong. It is also very expensive! If you seal plywood properly it won't rot and its very strong in both torsional and tensile strength.

When I finally do mine I will cut the deck out, then cut the stringers back from the transom. Cut the transom out next being very careful to leave the outside skin in place, then laminate transom back in. Next repair stringers and tie them into transom. then remove cap and recore. Doing a hull in this order it is much less likely to flex as there is always some part of the structure holding the rest in place. Lastly flip and repair bottom.

Good luck and post some pics man!

Anybody got a clue how I post pictures on here? I have been trying for days and for some reason cant figure it out. I plan to start grinding out the transom this weekend and getting the project rolling. I have decided to go with a laminated transom with two sheets of 3/4" kiln dried PT plywood with three layers of glass between. Pretty similar to the transom done by Lil Richard. Once I figure out how to post pictures I will detail the progress.

Thanks

I created a photobucket account, then uploaded some photo's there. Photobucket will give you codes below each pic. use the Img code by copy and pasting it directly into this comment box, and whammo! If you do it that way you should be OK.

You'll need to use a photo hosting site like photobucket (free) to store your pics so start there and open an acct, upload your pics, size them to 640x480, save the resized ones as the originals and then follow the instructions here to post them in your topics here.

I posted this for another member so don't worry if your original pics are bigger/smaller than what is mentioned in the first several lines. The theory is still the same.

Hey Guys,
Sorry it has taken so long to get another post up. I've been in and out of town for the last four weeks which has left little time for the boat. I got the transom grinded down the other day and today installed the fresh layer of 1708 to her. Next step is cutting the plywood pieces for the transom and getting them sandwiched together. How many layers of glass do I need to have between the two sheets of 3/4" plywood? I plan on following Lil Richards rebuild for these steps. Let me know if there are any little secrets that will help in these next steps.

Last night we thought we had the pictures figured out but the computer dropped off line right as we went to post them up. My wife is working tonight and she is the computer person so we will try again when she gets a chance.

Thanks for any input and pictures will be up soon...I promise.

i would mix up some glue with cabosil and put a coat on each piece of wood with a trowel, then drop a layer of 1708 in between and let her rip
