What size batteries??
« on: April 28, 2011, 02:23:52 PM »
Hey everyone,
I have a 25 ft Osprey with an older (1986) Yamaha V6, 225hp motor.  I will be running sonar, radar, radio x2, a few bait wells etc and have a 2 battery system.  I acquired the boat at the end of last season and have yet to drop it in... Just curious what type and size batteries I will need to crank this old SOB.

This should start a good discussion, lots of things to consider; location of the batteries relative to the engine for Cold Cranking Amps, engine alternator size, accessory load, etc. Sounds you have a pretty good amp draw potential. There are a couple of camps in our forum as to which type of battery to use. My personal choice is group 29 or larger, 1000 CCA, min 150 minute reserve dual purpose cranking and deep cycle X 2 from Autozone, about $115 ea. with good maintenance expect a 4-5 year life. I run with my battery switch on "both". I am a firm believer in overkill on batteries. You may want to consider a third large deep cycle or dual purpose for your radar and electronics with a battery isolator. You should be getting a ton of advice by supper time tonight.

I have 250CCP with vhf, gps, fishfinder, radar, autopilot. I have twins.  Port engine is just a starting battery and it also powers the windlass.  I always start the engine before using the windlass.  I have one group 27 dual purpose battery on the bank.
starboard engine has all the electronics, pumps and lights on it.  I had two big 6v batteries on this bank to handle the load.  I have just replaced that bank with a single AGM battery.  At some point i will buy another AGM battery so I can double them up at night, for instance, when im using more than im making.
