AM/FM Antenna
« on: May 18, 2011, 07:00:05 AM »
How about a few opinions on an antenna?  My little wire one that hangs out of the back of the radio is a POS, always getting interference.  I was considering the shakespeare VHF/AM/FM splitter (4357-S) that lets me use my VHF antenna, but there about $60?  Anybody use one of those?  Or a decent regular roof mount marine antenna?  Thanks
Marc

Marc,
I don't care what the advertisements say, the splitters cost you some range on your VHF.  Maybe a little, maybe a lot depending on the splitter.  I would go with a dedicated FM radio antenna.  If you never get into fringe VHF range then the splitter would be fine.  $0.02

If you split the antenna line you split the power - half power (-3db).  You may have to boost the line after that to be acceptable.

Believe it or not, the cheap little dipoles you can get at Radio Shack seem to work pretty damn good.  Besides, who listens to radio on the water anymore?  Sorry Marc, for me it's MP3s, CDs, and if I need weather, VHF...

I don't want to hear a talk show...

From the not so great movie (the TV sitcom it evolved into was slightly better) of the same name (actually a single from the sound track) circa 1978 but who's counting. Most notably (just for me that is) are songs from Joe Walsh and Neal Young but if memory recalls, Buffett had a song too (for you ParrotHeads). Please don't forget Walter B though. After all he co wrote it and wasn't a half bad "geetar" picker himself.

CB, thanks for the correct year....just took a stab at it.

I think it may be a combination of senility and those years being kind of a blur... :flower:

Don't go with a splitter.   :puker:

I have had good luck using a cheapo metal car antenna (think Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, etc.) that is mounted inside the console - not outside.  Nothing is exposed, so no wiring issues and nothing to hang up lines or catch onto.   :thumleft:   You can also tape one of the wire-type dipoles to the inside of the console and it will work OK - radio frequencies are unaffected by fiberglass.

I think my 230 has a car style antenna dropped down behind the liner in the cabin. Works fine.
