Can an Aquasport sink?
« on: January 07, 2006, 03:37:22 PM »
Now it may sound like a retarded question to you but it pondered my mind when I saw all the foam that is actually in the boat between the stringers. You all probabaly know what Boston Whalers are known for; there the unsinkable legend! Wich really is true because my grandfather has a thirteen and he never leaves the plug in when the boat is at rest on the mooring and it may draw some water in the well but it doesn't so much as go down a half an inch in the water. With the Montauks it may be different but as far as I'm concerned they are unsinkable (unless something extremely sudden and serios happens). With all the foam in the Aquasports, does this serve the same purposes as it does for a whaler? If not then why do they put it there? To take up empty space? Any input is awesome, Mr. Osprey

Yes, AS's can sink, and do.  Not nearly the amount of flotation as Whalers.

and unless they have been rebuilt, the foam is usually waterlogged.

How does water reach the foam? Is water able to sit in the bottom of the boat meaning the whole bottom of the boat is the bilge area? Who designed that?By water being easily accesible to the foam it completely is pointless to have it there, no? Please, someone fill me in on this!
