Stripped Wheel
« on: December 27, 2005, 02:57:36 PM »
When out in the garage this week, I was turning the wheel on the Osprey to keep the Motor shaft loose (since it froze in the cold New England last year) and accidently stripped the steering. :(
So I dissasembled the "steering arm on the motor to turn it by hand and took the wheel and unit out. Since the unit under the eheel costs $70, I figure I can pick up a brand new teleflex system for $150. Of all the sysytems what's the best for my boat? Length? Model?

Any help is great.

Don't know models offhand but get the "no feedback".  You will love it.

I just installed a used hydraulic steering system (Teleflex Seastar) and love it - will never go back to cable.  The wheel doesn't move a hair if I take my hands off under any type of power.  Check a used marine place for your options on this.

I too upgraded to a NFB Teleflex. I love it. WOT and I can take my hands off the wheel. I got the 18' rotary for around $150.

I couldn't afford hydraulic.

Stripped wheel vs. hydraulic

Hydraulic no feedback is the way to go.  Keep your eye on EBay and you can pick up a hydraulic system very reasonably.  Search for Teleflex hydraulic or Seastar - you may have to be patient, but eventually you will find one.

Seastar is the "mac daddy" of their line - the "bay star" is the one for smaller boats.  I ended up with the Seastar, not knowing it until I cleaned up the mess after they installed it.

Anyone know the length for the cable in a 170? Took out the cable today and am not sure where to measure from and to. Anyone know?

Isn't there a pin that you remove to separate the cable from the steering mechanism that the wheel connects to?  I think I'd measure from that connection to the very end (motor end).  If all else fails, take it to a marine place and ask for help.

I've got the standard issue Teleflex Safe-T steering on my boat.  Can I upgrade to the no-feedback system using the same cable?  Can I just replace the steering box with the no-feedback box?
