Hatch delaminating/crack
« on: February 23, 2011, 12:43:33 PM »
Hello Everyone,
Last year a small crack in the gel coat on the top of my fish hatch appeared which was repaired with advice from you guys. This year I have a crack on the bottom of the same fish well hatch (see pic). It seems like the whole bottom is delaminating from the top and the core is getting mushy. Any suggestions on how to repair this wouldbe appriciated. Should i cut off some of the botton to expose the core material? SeaBob do you know what the core is made of?
Once again thanks for the help.

Someone on this board had a problem similar to yours and documented the fix. I cant remember who it was, but I think the repair was to the gas tank cover. I do remember he cut out the core material, replaced and re-glassed, and put cinder block on top to help with bowing issues.

Sorry I cant be of more help, that's all i remember.

Hi Guys,
I figured I would post this info for Explorer and Osprey owners. I cut apart the cracked fish box hatch. There is a plywood core which was soaked and starting to rot. Its clear when you have the inner layer of glass off that the problen is caused by the hole for the hatch lift handle. The plywood started to soak up water and the rot is clearly the worst around the hatch lift hole. Im not sure what a good fix would be but if you dont have the problem I have yet; I guess it would be a good time to try to stop water from getting in there.
Have a great day,
Bob
