Seastar/Baystar HYD Fluid...

Well, seeing as I haven't had to bleed or re-fill a system lately, Christian's HydraSports begged me to go get some fluid.  Now, as we speak, Worst Marine is selling Seastar Fluid for $20/quart.  So I went to Brooksville Airport yesterday morn, Phillips Aviation fluid meeting MIL-PRF-5606H (Teleflex required)...$7.92/quart, dyed red for leak purposes...


Come spring, and you need to bleed or top off the system, VISIT YOUR LOCAL SMALL AIRPORT!!!

Great tip!  And as we all know, a little goes a long way. Pop the top on one, use what you need, save the rest to an empty plastic quart oil container, etc.

Spin the helm, bleed the system. Another good winter thing to mess with on a decent day.

The nice thing is the airport is 20 mins. tops down 41.  Worst is 40 mins. down 19. You take your pick, I'll take 41 heading towards Masryktown...

Mark, MIL-PRF-5606H fluids are recommended in the install manual as acceptable replacements for Seastar Fluid.  Won't void the warranty should there be a failure.  When I was at Wellcraft, we used the Shell fluid.  At Stamas, we used the Chevron fluid...

Around a year and a half ago, went by the local airport and purchased one gallon AIRPARTS (as listed on can) MIL-PRF-5606H Hydraulic Fluid "dyed red for identification and leak detection." Purchased per original Hatteras spec. (1964) for the steering system.

Probably enough to last a lifetime. And cheap.
