Garmin Chart Recall
« on: January 25, 2011, 02:14:01 PM »
Just thought this was good info to pass for anyone with a bluechart and/or G2 Vision card.  In my search for the problem between my new ICOM and my Garmin 545 talking with eachother, I stumbled across this.  You have to dig to get to it, I am sure they didn't advertise it with flashing lights.  I have to check my date on my card, or you can call CS at Garmin and they will walk you through the menus to pull the date off your SD card.  But, if it was a 2009 card, they will send you a brand new Bluechart G2 or G2 Vision Card... pretty sweet considering they average around 200.00 for a new one.

Mine are the old BlueChart.  No G or G2.

Yeah but the sad thing is there will be no more updates to the original BlueChart maps.  Actually ended at the end of 2009.

They're not. That was when it originally happened in June of 09. They now have a g2 and g2 Vision chip model 2010. I purchased a g2 Vision (in August of 09) during the recall and was shipped the 2008.5 version. I dropped off the face of the earth last year so I missed out on the exchange for the 09. They will be sending me the 2010 chip instead for the exchange   .
Chips sold now (from a reputable source) are the 2010 versions.

At least something good came out of my visits to Tampa.

Off the subject, but on the subject, does anyone know a good source to get outdated chart chips, for say an outdated Lowrance GPS?  Circa 2003-2004.

Would prefer NauticPath for the cheaper price, but will go with Navionics if it's available.

Yes that would be the area I'm interested in (#642), but I'm running into some compatibility issues with the Lowrance.  See-

Looks like 3XG is the South America Chip.  :?  Do you know what the Gold XG-3 is referring to?  Can I buy a chip just for area #642 that will work in the unit?

J,
I should have an answer for you sometime tomorrow.

Apparently an (possibly free????) update window for some machines closed 31 Dec. 2010.

Not sure but you may be able to get that big chart as a download to your computer for $25 bucks. Then maybe transferred to the MSD (card??). I'm pickin' at straws till tomorrow. :?

I did download the software to download the maps (free) but until I talk to the techs there, nothing is given. :silent:

Just curious, is there a chip in there now? Tampa maybe?
If so, it might generate a little coin.

More to follow.

Ain't life grand.

Man, that would be awesome

There is a chip in there now, 16MB.  I've connected it to my PC at home, but I think I need some additional software to view the files.  I'll look into it tonight when Big Brother isn't watching me.

I can't thank you enough sir  :salut:

Jessie and I have been working on this and even with the pics shown, you can see quite a bit of difference in detail. Both are from the same spot but at different scales. The chip makes the difference.

Before.

After

I apologize for the crappy pic but you get the idea.

That chip will make a hell of a difference in the ol' Lowrance.
