Hey Capt. Bob,
You are correct, "wean off of leaded gas" was what I meant to say. Specifically, depending on the carburator design, jets will either meter air or gasoline. "Fuel" is actually the mixture of the two. Most outboard jet designs meter gasoline. In the case of our 1975 85 Evinrude; it happened to be the year that lead was removed from gasoline. Lead was an octane booster among other things. So when the lead was removed the octane calculation method changed and the fuel became "under octaned" The only fuel that was still usable for a short time was Amoco which had used nickel as an octane booster. (this was not Amoco white gas) as many people think. So anyway, the high speed jet sizes were increased by .001-.002" to richen the fuel mixture and I believe a 1 degree retard on timing. It's getting a little harder to remember some of these details!

WOW, were to start. Its taken me a week to digest all this great info. Thanks to everyone who gave their input. I side with bigger is better, you can always back out of it. I started looking at 130 etec's ended up looking at 150 etec HO. The weight difference is negligible between a 130 AND A 150. But when I compare the weight of a new130 to the old 85 its incredible. 278 for 85 and 409 for the 130! Ouch. So I think I will keep running the 85 on High Test till she blows. But if and when the day comes 150 etec or 150 optimax will be the choice. Found an awesome post that has virtually every outboard and its weight listed if anyone is interested. (this could be old news, I am a new comer)hit this site and scroll down about 5 posts.
