PVC board
« on: November 23, 2010, 05:46:31 PM »
I have a question? Has anyone used PVC board to make exterior parts for a boat, not structural, Like a door frame on a center console or a tackle center. I'm not talking about decking,Azack trim board is one brand. it glues up great!Just an idea

I have used StarBoard, Polyethylene sheets, which I am assuming you are referring to, several times. I love the stuff. If you can't get the desired thickness, you have the option of laminating more than one sheet together, but that is a little pricey, or adding stringers to the back side on larger pieces, depending on it's usage. For projects such as cc door frames, cc doors, or a tackle center it would be perfect. It's easy to cut, strong, sands well, and you don't have to worry about rot. It is heavier than wood though.

Thanks WhazzupII, I've used starboard, and your right, it's great.I want to try a product called Azack , it's a PVC trim board made for exterior house trim. It comes in all common lumber sizes from 1x1-4x8 sheets, and it's 1/2 the weight of starboard. But not very good for structural use.

starboard manuf. does not even recommend it for structural use.  Starboard is tough to reliably glue as well.  I can see a PVC product being handy just because it can be glued.

i use it all the time for trim pieces and hatch lips and stuff like that. good wood alternative, and like you said it can be glued and glassed unlike starboard.

We have actually had success bonding Starboard. My best friend is a marine mechanic, and I helped him build a rigging table. He hit the surfaces to be bonded with a torch, and we used epoxy to bond the surfaces. It is still going strong through two years of offshore use.

I have used Azack board to remake my rod holders on my 19-1 and used it to stand off the rod holders I made for the side of the console like you said it is easy to work with and is less than star board and a lot lighter

I've got both PVC board & starboard on my boat, has been on there for about 3 years now, there are a few disadvantages to using the PVC board.  It seems that it gets dirty faster, it will get moldy if in a shaded area, and it's a little softer so it will scar if you drop something on it or knick it with something.  Other than that it does clean up easy with a little bleach & seems to be holding up OK, if I did it over again I'd pay a little more & use Starboard.
