Nasty stuff running down the lower unit
« on: December 19, 2010, 03:47:57 PM »
Ok, has anyone seen this before, I have removed the lower cowl halfs, looked everywhere, and this stuff keeps oozing out only after I run the motor for a while and it gets up to normal op temp.  It has an oil/gas smell, but I can't find where its coming from    2004 90 HP Johnson, carb'd engine.  Thanks all
Marc

Doesn't exhaust come out those ports?  Maybe unburned fuel mix?

Give that man a cigar :salut:

That's what it is.  Just goes with owning a 1990s era JohnyRude. All over my 96 and has never seemed to cause any problem. Seems to disappear with carb rebuilding only to return at a later date. Also comes and goes for no particular reason, happening less when you use the engine more.

Yeah, but its not coming out of the exhaust port, it's leaking between the split of the lower cowling, its something draining, dripping inside the cowling and running out through the split.  I know about the "wetstack" the old 2 strokes get when operating at slow speeds and in cooler water, that usually runs out down around the foot out of the hub area??

Marc,
After you have run her hard, and the leakage shows back up, have you taken the mid-section cowls off, and, if so, can you see telltale streams coming from the PH?

I had the cowls off, but not directly after a good hard run, that may be the way to Troubleshoot it, but I have split them when it looked like it was getting worse each day, so I thought I would see the tell tale maybe from the carbs or something, I also need to check the enrichment valve when I can get a second person to watch, I know those were inherent to crack and spray when pushing the key for choke

Could be ooze from the powerhead base gasket; check powerhead bolt torque or have you sprayed corrosion guard (or equivalent) on the powerhead lately? Also look for any bleed hose issues, fuel system clamps, soft hoses from ethenol fuel...

Fitz,
I have sprayed the PH down with fluid film, and I thought that might be it, but that was early summer,  would have thought that stuff would have been gone by now?? It is the right color though... Thanks

Maybe shes just got a runny nose; it is flu season you know! My Mercs do the same thing but it is hard to tell the color but the stuff tastes like collards.

I have an oil/water separator on my kicker motor crankcase breather that sometimes splooges out some junk that looks that color...comes out at the same place as the tell tale-a small hole just a little bit above it.  yammi 9.9 4 stroke.
