anyone live or fish near ochlockonee river
« on: August 12, 2012, 08:08:22 PM »
I have a new hunting lease on the ochlockonee river and we also have a cap site on the river. I have never spent anytime in the area or on the water in the area. What kind of fishing is good there (see the picture of the are we are at)? What is the water depth like, can I operate my flatback in the area? Any really good fishing within decent distance of our area?

Ive never met an alligator I didnt want to turn into a wallet and side of nuggets.

I have not been down that river.  But I used to go down the steinhatchee river a good bit.  Most of the areas around there are shallow and muddy with a few rock here and there for good measure.  There is good red fishing and trout up there.

I fish Ochlockonee Shoals which lies to the east of your camp. You appear to be located on the tributary that becomes the Crooked River. There is a bridge just east of your position and you can run all the way to the Gulf from there. Can you get under the bridge? I don't know. Never tried but I've had my CCP up the river to the State Park and wandered around in some of the narrower sections so you shouldn't have problems with a shallow draft boat. Large boats are seen docking at the Park opposite Chesley Island. I don't fish up there and while the bay is a mile wide in spots, the water can shallow up real quick. I stayed in the marked channel.

Redfish and trout are the main fish, though I would imagine you will find a mixed bag. I rarely see many people fishing in the bay itself (I crossed it twice daily for 2 1/2 years) but fishing around the Gulf side (Apalachee Bay) is popular with the locals. Bald Point and the Shoals (grass/sand) are still producing fish, though this is the slow time of year due to the warm water. Not sure if my Bay chart goes that far in but I'll check tomorrow. When do you planned to visit?

Your lease is in the area of St. Joe's land holdings in Franklin County (the blue line in the river in your pic is the county line between Franklin and "Willkillya") on infamous St. James Island.

Good luck.

Here's the chart for Apalachee Bay.

It appears you have clearance at the first bridge but I have no idea what your requirement is. Water shows deep untill you get into the Bay. I've been to the ruins just to your west many years ago.

Thanks for your imput guys and the chart is awesome!

I have had all kinds of responses on what kind of fishing to do... On my hunting site I have heard everything from reds and trout to catfish, bream and bass. Thats a pretty wide spread of species for channel in the woods!

Any input on the species would be great as well and thanks again for your help.
