The issue with the proper fluid is that if you use the wrong fluid it will attack the rubber seals in the helm and in a year you will have to have it rebuilt because all of the rubber seals turned into goo.  You can probably find one of the acceptable alternative fluids at Tractor Supply or NAPA.

The fluid we used at WC/AS was Shell Aero 7 (what's in your helm).  Small local airports are great places to pick up these Teleflex-compatable fluids...
