Calling all Bob's

Hey Bob! I was wondering about the shift install on my 1998 215 Explorer Volvo GS.
I had the cable replaced by the dealer and was about to hook up the shift control when I realized the throtle cable is 5 ft. short of the
shift control. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome Wanda!  Are both cables long enough?  You might just have one cable that 5 feet too long.  Outboard usually use cables of the same length.  I/O setups usually need the shift cable to be longer than the throttle cable because the shift link is toward the rear of the engine and the throttle cable connects to the carb or throttle body in the center of the engine.  As long as everything fits, don't worry!

Wanda, as Cap'n John said, the attachment points on the motor are different on an I/O as opposed to an O/B.  On the end of each cable jacket you'll find the length, which is the last 2 digits of the P/N.  The longer goes to shift, shorter to throttle...

The dealer put in the wrong cable. He let his son work on the boat and the kid made a mistake.
He replaced it and all it well. I'm learning boats as I go so ............
