25 inch shaft

Does anyone know on here if a 25 inch shaft motor will work on my 2001 215 aquasport explorer? My current motor is a 20 inch shaft, i am looking at a possible re power and the motor i am looking at is 25 inch, any info would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance!

Without going to a jack plate, 5" is just too much difference...

You could use the 4" non-adjustable jack plate like T-H makes...

WOW a 20" shaft on a 215?  That seems REALLY short to me.  Is that on a bracket or is the transom just that low?

That's exactly what I was thinking.... I would have thought a boat that big would be a 25"

That does seem kind of odd, but remember the boat does have a transom cutout.  20" shaft motors do cost the OEMs less, and Genmar was no novice at trying to save money wherever they could...

i thought the same thing but i searched the specs on my current motor and it says its a 20 in, i thought for sure it would have been a 25

Wow there are times when I think my transom is low.  I can't imagine a 5" lower opening.  Then again the V of the hull could be different.  Just get out a tape measure and measure from the top of the cutout to the bottom of the V.  It should be well  20"  LOL.

Absolutely right, CB.  They even badged one for a show with AS graphics on one side, WC on the other...

The 2 boats were absolutely identical, except for the upholstery...

I looked at some pics of 215s from that vintage and they looked like they had 25 inch motors.  Ads for one said it had a Mercury EXLPTO - that would be a 25" motor.  

Are you sure it's a 20"?

All have me really thinking right now.  Typical boats the size of a 215 Explorer will have 25" shafts.  Yet, I'm sure Micky has done the research on his S/N, which Evinrude's database says is a 20" shafter.  So who's to say the mid-section wasn't swapped out in the previous owners life to a 25"?  Drive shaft, shift shaft, and mid-section cowling, and, viola, a 25" from a 20"...

I was thinking the same thing.  I just swapped mid sections on my merc converting it from a 20" into a 25" Frankenmerc.   The serial number on my bracket says it is now a 2001 motor       My power head is a 97 and who knows what the lower unit is...  LOL

The 1997 catalog lists the 215 EX but not the transom height.
The 2000 catalog lists the 215EX with a 25" transom height.
The 2005 catalog does the same.

Just a thought.
