Giggin with gran.
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:37:08 AM »
Okay, so here ya go!
What a nice trip!
The only issue was it was HOT!!!

Porters Neck is just north of Wilmington and it is such a pretty area!

So we got in a little fishing in gran's little boat, but it was just brutally hot. My son Hunter and I tried as long as we could stand it but I didn't want him to have any heat issues so we we went back to the motel around 1. Later, around 6 we drove back up to gran's house and got everything ready for some giggin that night. We waited for dark, got in the boat and headed out across the marshes to his secret spots. We still had some wind issues and just to the north were some really intense storms with lots of lightning. So we got to "the spot" and dropped the lights in. Put Hunter up on the starboard bow with his gig (he is 11 and had never done this so  he had a little trouble at first figuring out that the motor was going to be off and he was now the motor) with gran on his left. We had told Hunter about all the things we would see but I don't think he realized what we meant until the lights come on and he starts seeing crabs, skates, minnows, needlefish and all the other life that the marshes support. We pull up close to the marsh edge and gran spots the first flounder actually up in the grass. He shows Hunter what it looks like and then sticks it! Dang we didn't get skunked!

Here's a couple of videos I shot. I think you'll get the idea.
Also if you look at the videos you can see the difference between the old school halogen lights and grans experimental LED one. Truly an amazing difference and it doesn't draw hardly any amps!

I want to thank Scott for taking the time to show us an unforgettable time.
You don't meet people as nice as him everyday and this was a time that I will always treasure with my son and I am sure will be the topic of many conversations with his buddys for a long time!
Thanks Scott and we are looking forward to the next time!

Super report Lewis.  Hunter will never forget that night.

Okay Scott, we need a tutorial on this LED light.  Like Capt John did on LED light bulbs.  ;)

Well Lew, I'm glad you both had a good time, it was a pleasure to have met you! We had a great time.....Lewis was nice and didn't tell ya'll about the burnt BBQ chicken (grease fire on the grill)...

Cap'n John and I went out last night to the same area, and got six......er, 24.

We had a great time, too.

Great finally being able to put faces with names......good stuff!

The LED light is a 12 volt, 12 watt LED, I'd say it would be the equivalent of a 100 watt halogen, or 150 watt incandescent. I took a dremel tool and cut off the surround so it would fit the globe of my flounder light. This was the first time it was used, we were all pretty impressed. John commented that not only was it bright, but the light color itself really showed the contrast on the bottom. Made it easy to spot the bigguns....

Yep, we went out and had a BIG time!  Long time since I'd been giggin - man time flies when you're having a good time!   :thumleft:   We got 6, but would have had 7 if Capt. John had not thrown one overboard shaking it off the gig...

Thanks to G3 for the hospitality - let's look at a fall reunion - maybe around Wilmington?
