Used gas tank fit in a 222XF
« on: June 06, 2010, 08:44:29 AM »
I have a 222XF and need a fuel tank. I called fmt and they want a grand for a new one and the boat just is not worth it. I found one from a Bayliner that is what I am looking for but it's an inch to wide 2 inches up from the bottom. The tank is 20 inches shorter then the factory tank so I will have room at the back of the coffin.
My question is if the coffin is just hanging(It looks like it hangs from the floor and does not attach to the bottom)or is it a structual part of the hull. My plan was to cut the sides just enough for the tank to fit and make a reinforced hanger for the new tank. I have a very good glass guy but he can't make the call without seeing whats behind the sides. I am hoping someone has had the deck off the hull and knows how it's attached.
                         Thanks!

This is Capt. John's install. Mine  (on the CCP) appeared to be the same.

I believe the coffin on these models are part of the deck construction (though I may be wrong) and rests between the stringers and off the bottom of the keel.. You may have an inch clearance on each side but the best way to tell is to drill a small hole in the area you plan on cutting out.

Good luck.

The tank tub is somewhat structural, and also serves as a vapor guard in the event of a leak.  That is how Aqusport got away withough a bilge blower with a below-deck tank.  There should never be any gas in the bilge unless something goes wrong.

I would avoid cutting the tub - you can find a tank that fits if you look around a bit - it may not fit exactly, but will work.  Or just have RDS or Phil at Alloy Metal Works fab one up for you.  Mine was $650 for a .125" wall, 85 gallon tank, and was delivered in a week from Alloy.  I think the custom tank that matches the original is worth the investment, especially if you ever expect to sell the boat.  People are squeemish about buying a boat with a non-Code tank.

Hey gonefishin,
Do you have size of your tank? Can you give me name of who you dealt with and the phone number to get your's made? I think I will just pay the money and get the right tank.
                                      Thanks, Johne
P.S. Anyone with the dimentions of a tank for a 222XF that would share them would be great.

Phil at Alloy did mine. I was happy with the price and construction of the tank.
