Check Engine Light
« on: June 07, 2010, 04:57:39 PM »
I have a 1998 225 johnson ocean runner, and the check engine light came on.  Waterpump is new, thermostats new, water seperator is new, in-line fuel filter new (All Replaced this weekend), and the engine runs fine.  Any ideas?  The only one I have is the hour meter just turned 400 and maybe its like a car, like the pre-programmed 30K BS miles light?  If so does anyone know how to turn it off besides placing a black piece of tape over it   ?  Or maybe its a low gas thing?

Boat is pretty new to me.

Sounds like a fuel restriction problem.  Could be trash in a line or somehow line got pinched.

Of course it could be like you said and be an "idiot" light. :D

Did the engine start to run any differently before the idiot light came on?  On your "System Check", you've got "low oil", and "no oil", and neither of those lights came on.  You've got a good pisser stream...

I know my '93 Ocean Runner had an alarm for fuel flow restriction.  I think it was a vacuum switch.  I let my manuals go with the boat.

I've read a lot about the fuel restriction so I will check that first. I have also read about the vacum switch. I'll pick up my manual tomorrow and hopefully it will help. The light comes on and stays on even in the on position before starting.  Water pump and everything cooling related is new so not a water issue.

On my boat i have a fuel diverter valve to switch fuel from the main to the kicker, and if it's on the kicker and i start the main the check engine light comes on,switch it back and all is fine,so low fuel pressure is my guess, check the fuel line as it goes into the motor, where it and all the cables run through that plastic boot,i once had my oil line pinched in there and didn't know it till the no oil light came on.
