Tilt Problem
« on: April 14, 2010, 10:13:18 PM »
I'm having trouble with the tilt on my 97' Ocean Runner 225. It started slowing down and making a grinding sound. Others have said it sounds like there's air bubbles in the line. Is this possible? How do I bleed the line?
Thanks,
Chris

Have you checked the fluid resivor, tilt the motor up engage the tilt lock then look for a black plastic cap, should have a slot on top that a flat head screw driver will fit into, the seals on mine were bad and topping off the fluid bought me over a year of use before replacing.

I'd like to do that but I can't raise the motor. The manual release screw is frozen too. I'll shoot some PB Blaster in there and see if I can't break it loose.

Try "helping" the engine tilt up with someone or a come- a- long attached to the gearcase and pull up on the gearcase while you engage the up button and try to tilt up the engine. Also check all the electrical connections and battery voltage to make sure that isnt part of the problem. Hopefully the system does not have water in it. If it has air in the system you should hear the pump cavitating and a whining sound. Normally if you have air in the system you will see a fluid leak out of the trim ram piston(s).

Yeah, I just got a quote that it's $1150 to replace the whole assembly which they say is shot due to corrosion. The ground wire bolt sheared off and it took them quite a while to unseize the manual release bolt. All seals were leaking. Now, to break the news to my wife. It will be most unpleasant.

A reliable 225 for $1100? I think not.
