215 Explorer Pump Help
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:23:36 AM »
Hello,

I removed my Johnson Pump that drains out the two fish boxes as it was seized up.  I brought the pump home with intentions over the loooong winter to order another.  Well I'm finally getting around to purchase a new one but I can't seem to locate the old one for the model/serial number information I need.  Does anyone here, who might own a 215 explorer, know what model the pump is?  I was on the Johnson site but the models look different and I'm not sure if it was 12V or 24V.  I think the hose was 1 1/2" but I would need to get back in the boat to check. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,  Greg

i will climb in my boat tonight and see if i can get a model number off my pump, but its funny you bring that up because mine also stopped working at the end of last year i know my pump is a masorator pump not a regular live well pump which i wont put back in there is no need for the masorator pump in my opinion, i dont use those 2 boxes for live wells anyway just for storage so i can see why they put them in there if used for fish boxes you would want the masorator pump to grind up all the the stuff from the fish.

I believe mine was a macerator pump also. I don't use my fish boxes as intended and would like to use them for storage. How do you keep the water out of the fish boxes?  Mine are always filling up with rain water and due to poor design the pump out holes are an inch up from the bottom of the well so there is always water on the bottom of mine.

Thx for the help!

Yea i just use mine for storage as well, because i have the live well behind the helms chair. I have the same problem and the same poor design the pump really serves no purpose due to the placement of the drain holes, to tell you the truth when mine stopped working it wasn't first on my list to fix i use a regular hand pump to pump out the wells, it is a pain in the ass but due to the way the pump works i can get all of the water out with the hand pump. I had a real hard time even trying to get my pump out through the port hole in my deck did you have a hard time pulling yours?

Yeah...It was a one handed job.  I broke of one of the screws as it was rusted in place.  That little 8" round access hatch is a bitch.  I was seriously thinking about replacing it with a larger rectangular hatch but backed away as I didn't want to do a butch job.  I would like to research the whole job and give it a try sometime...maybe at the end of this coming season.

Yes that little hatch is def a bitch luckily there isn't much down there but the bilge pump and that well pump. the bilge pump wouldn't be to hard because its straight down but as you stated anything you do down there will be one handed. Shoot me some pics of your rig i love to compare things i will do the same my email is miky2884@gmail.com

ioneyes,
I'm thinking if you want to replace your pump with another Johnson, this is the pump you need:

Model TA3P10-19, 12VDC, 1 1/2" Inlet, 1" discharge.

Seabob...Thx!!!  That's the one I was looking at but wasn't sure of the voltage.  Would you suggest any others besides Johnson?  Is Johnson considered to be a good pump manufacturer?

Greg,
Not really.  They are less expensive, but, as always, you get what you pay for.  Jabsco makes a good pump, same basic dimensions as yours.  One thing you want is an exposed shaft on the end of the pump with a slot in it to allow you to turn the shaft with a screwdriver should it get bound up.  Also a removable end cover plate so that you can get out the fishing line that inevitably binds up a shaft!  Johnson has eliminated these two features on their new pumps.  Fishing line will be the death of a macerator...

again i would stay away from a macerator pump if you are only using the wells for storage, i feel they don't pump as well as a regular pump and there really is no reason for it if it will just be pumping water with no debris, save yourself some money just my opinion
